Meet Gabby Mitchell
My name is Gabby Mitchell, and I am a licensed clinical social worker who works with people whose lives and mental health have been negatively impacted by trauma, violence, sudden loss, systemic oppression, and major life changes. For too long, you have been pushing through the pain in silence. I'm here to tell you that your pain is real, and that there is a way to grow and heal what you have gone through. No matter if you are the first person in your family who has struggled or the 14th person, you can be the first person to live a better, mentally healthy lifestyle.
I am a trained clinician dedicated to supporting your well-being.
For years, telling even family members that I wanted to do “trauma therapy” was the equivalent of telling them I wanted to switch to an all-human diet. Repeatedly I received the same responses: “Why would you want to do that?” “Black people don’t even go to therapy!” Often this would be followed by the popular unsolicited and unprofessional advice that one “just pray about it,” as though Jesus did not also create therapy. Other horrific answers include the assumption that as a therapist I psychoanalyze everyone, make patients tell me their secrets while laying on a couch, and can prescribe pills that magically make problems go away.
All of this is false.
I am an Illinois licensed clinical social worker and I use traditional therapy methods to help people find the healing they need to live their best lives. My specialty is working with children and adults who have been exposed to violence, abuse, poverty, loss, or other forms of trauma who may not have had an opportunity to recover. Many of my clients seem okay on the outside but struggle to keep it together every day. They live fast-paced lives and are accustomed to avoiding their feelings. They put others first and themselves last. But overall, they want a change to pause, to be heard, and to heal.
Many of my clients come in to deal with:
PTSD
Depression
Anxiety
Grief/Loss
Domestic Violence
Childhood trauma and abuse
Life transitions
Lack of motivation
Chronic anger/fatigue/dysregulation
Childhood/Adolescent/Young Adult issues
I am trained in a variety of trauma-informed treatments including:
Motivational Interviewing
Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP)
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
Completed NASW-IL Clinical Supervisor Training
